Honors British Literature Week of September 5

A copy of Beowulf translated by Burton Raffel will be provided by teacher; students need to purchase their own copy if they intend to write in the book.

All things Beowulf:

Adventures of Beowulf is a modern translation by David Breeden, a creative writing professor at Schreiner University, is very accessible. Includes excellent illustrations,

Annotated Beowulf uses The Harvard Classics translation by Frances B. Grummere with footnotes.

Beowulf in Cyberspace is a new modern translation with interesting original art. The site itself is quirky because of fancy scripting, but the glossary and illustrations are worth clicking a few times. Also checkm out the pictorial guide.

Beowulf in Hypertext uses The Harvard Classics translation by Frances B. Grummere with extensive sidenotes and explanations.

Electronic Beowulf is an image-based digitized version of the original manuscript.

Bulfinch Chapter 42 from Mythology is only a summary of Beowulf, but the links to background materials, illustrations, explanations, and analyses makes a visit worthwhile.

Wednesday - Introduction to Beowulf - Powerpoint and pages 32-36 in the textbook- What is an epic? Students took notes. Character chart and study guide questions were reviewed.

Homework - Read through Part 5 by Friday - 9/9 and answer questions in study guide. STUDY FOR VOCABULARY QUIZ TOMORROW

Thursday - Voc. 1 quiz, Beowulf - first pages will be discussed; meet the translator Burton Raffel - page 37 in the textbook.work on reading and question assignment that is due tomorrow!

Homework - Read through Part 5 by Friday - 9/9 and answer questions in study guide.

Friday - Beowulf continues; class discussion over reading and study questions; movie clip on Sutton Hoo, England where the Anglo Saxon treasures were found.
