Accelerated Math III - May 16, 2011 - Vector Test tomorrow

 The test on vectors and 3-D relationships that spring from them is tomorrow. Both classes opted to take "no calculator" tests.  The "Another Vector Review - Quite Thorough" is a great review for this test and the answers are posted outside my door and are (hopefully) on Coach Rinehimer's website.  Please review for this one, since it is the last test of the year!

 

 

Accelerated Math II - May 16, 2011 - The Binomial Distribultion

Today we reviewed permutations Download Permutations and combinations Download Combinations and discovered the beauty of Pascal's Triangle.  The assignment for the night is to read pages 212 - 214 and to work problems 1-16 on page 215.

Accelerated Math II - May 11, 2011 - Matrix Test tomorrow

You received the "Day in the Park Task" for a review and here are the answers to that task.

A) Otis's path is 13x + 17y = 3150

   Penny's path is 17x - 13y = 380  (Did you notice that the paths are perpendicular?)

   Their paths cross at (103.5, 106.1) or (23705/229, 24305/229). Let's call that point M.

   Since AM = 105.1 feet and BM = 93.0 feet, they don't actually meet. 

B) 2, 5, 27, 8, 5, 18, 5, 27, 1, 20, 27, 14, 15, 15, 14, 28  Penny will need to write this as a 2 X 8 matrix.

    1st row: 12   43   41   59   41   55   45   70

    2nd row: 26  13   87  123   83  137  105  159

Multiply by the 2 X 2 with elements [[2, 1][3/2, -1/2]], which is the inverse of the encoding matrix.

C)  Distance around the park is 606.6' or 607 feet.  The area is 22900 square feet. 

D)  Otis needs 6 ounces of unsweet tea and it won't fit in his glass.

     Penny needs 8 ounces of unsweet tea and 4 ounces of sweet tea, which leaves a 3.3333% sweet mixture.

     They will get 15/32 lb of pecans or 7.5 ounces.

E) V _4,3  There are 2 paths from the hot dog stand to the statue and 2 paths from the statue to the pond.  V² shows this because V² _{4, 3} = 2 and V² _{1, 4} = 2

F)  A hot dog costa $2.75, fries are $2.25 and a drink is $3.

Accelerated Math II - May 9, 2010 - Applications

Today we looked at applications of matrices, including Cramer's Rule and transformation matrices.  The assignment is :   Pg. 52: 9 - 21  and  Pg. 58: 9 - 16

Tomorrow we look at vertex edge graphs and start a review task for the test on Thursday.

    2.  Volumes of twtrahedrons and parallelopipeds

D)  Direction cosines

E)  Anything from the previous quiz

Accelerated Math II - May 5, 2011 - Secret Codes, etc.

For the next week, we are looking at various applications of matrices.  The big idea today was secret codes.  The assignment is to complete the worksheet students started in class today and to work the following problems from the book:

Pg. 41: 12-15

Pg. 42: 13-14

Accelerated Math II - May 3, 2011 - Matrix Equations

Today we went over matrix equations (except in 3rd, which ran short).  The assignment for all students is to read pages 54 - 56 in your green book and to work problems 1-18 on page 57.  Do problems 1-8 without technology, since your quiz is without technology.  You might try checking problem 15 using Gauss-Jordan. 

The quiz tomorrow covers:  finding determinants of matrices (even large ones), finding inverses of matrices (2 X 2 and one 3 X 3), solving one system of equations by Gauss-Jordan, and other questions about multiplying, adding and interpreting matrices.
