Accelerated Math II - March 31, 2011 - More 3-D

First of all, you need to complete the 3-D worksheet.  Then read the section before page 208.  (It recaps the distance formula in 3-D and the concept of an equation of a sphere.)  Then, work the odd problems and #20 on page 208.

Accelerated Math II - March 30, 2011 - 3 - D and Systems

Today in class, we discussed the conic project and started a 3-D task.  The assignment is to review systems of 2 equations and 2 unknowns:  From the Accelerated Math III book, work problems on Pg. 10: 1-21 odd, 22 - 24 and 31 - 40.  Also on page 16, do 3, 8, 13, 16, 19 - 22.

Also, before Friday, attempt to do the following (to get ready for your project).

1.  Type equations on your computer.

2.  Download a calculator graph on your computer.

3.  Take that graph to Paint or a similar piece of software and color a picture.

All of these are necessary to complete the face project, and you need to know how to do these skills.

Accelerated Math III - March 30, 2011 - No Test Tomorrow

However, I am concerned that many students aren't really ready for the test tomorrow.  There are several other activities that I would love to explore before assessing this unit, so I'm postponing the test until after spring break.  You still need to have all these assignments done by tomorrow, though!

Accelerated Math II - March 29, 2011 - Cross Sections

I used the term Cross Section on the test today and several of you didn't know what that was.  As I said, a cross section is the figure you get when you intersect a plane with a 3-D figure.  On the test, the problem said, "...the cross section is a hyperbola...", so that meant that the figure that you were looking at was a hyperbola.  For a great look at cross sections, see http://www.learner.org/courses/learningmath/geometry/session9/part_c/index.html

Another term that brought some confusion was the term "clearance", when applied to a road.  Tonight, look up the word "clearance" and see the many definitions that it has.  Bring in the one that you feel best applies to our test question.

Accelerated Math II - March 23, 2011 - Ellipse and Parabola Task

Today we compared the 2-focus reflective property of an ellipse with the refelctive property of a parabola.  Hopefully this will help the applications make more sense.  Their assignment is to keep working on the application problems.  The answers to the other worksheet are posted outside my door and also on Ms. Chase's blog.  The application answers will (hopefully) be posted, soon.

Acceleratd Math II -March 23, 2011 - Conics

We have been working with conic sections this week.  Today students have a quiz on hyperbolas, etc. and we will look at more applications.  A test is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday of next week.  Tomorrow students get more information about their conics project.
