Week of 02-28-11

Upon returning rested and geared up for the next few weeks, we will begin our study of the legislative and executive branches of the government.  Starting this week with Congress, we will check out the Congressional Faces, study the committee system, how legislation is really crafted, and begin a video that bridges an understanding of the two institutions.  The video of Clinton’s first term and Gingrich’s Republican Revolution is especially timely in light of the 03-04-11 deadline for a national budget and we will be simulating the budget making process in a couple weeks.  Please note that the assignment from the Snyder v. Phelps activity is due at the end of this week and that test corrections for the Judiciary test is due Monday, 03-07-11.  Please see the calendar and Key Terms for course of study details.

Week of 02-28-11

We return to our study of World War II and the Brown University Choices Program.  While preparing for the simulation/debate, we will be discussing Chapter 24.  The test for this unit is on Friday.  Please see the calendar and Key Terms for course of study details.

Week of 02-14-11

We will spend the next two weeks studying World War II and will incorporate Brown University’s Choices Program to enhance the materials.  There is an assignment due the day we get back from the February break – the reading assignment is on the calendar and the handout will be made available early this week.  Remember that the SHUSH for Unit 2 was rescheduled to this Tuesday, 02-15-11.  Please see the calendar and Key Terms for course of study details.

Week of 02-14-11

Continuing our study of the courts, we will discuss the specific Supreme Court eras this week.  In addition, students will analyze Snyder v. Phelps, a case recently argued before the Supreme Court.  The test for this unit is on Friday, 02-18.  Please see the calendar and key Terms for course of study details.

Week of 02-07-11

We start the week by looking at the difference between civil and criminal law and define a number of legal terms used when analyzing judicial action and Supreme Court cases.  The Faces Supremes will be presented as well.  The rest of the week is devoted to historical aspects of the development of the Supreme Court – from Federalist 78 to the Warren Court era.  Please see the calendar and Key Terms for course of study details.

Week of 02-07-11

The next few days is devoted to the Great Depression and FDR’s New Deal.  It is a shorter unit and students were given an opportunity this past Friday to work in class to be prepared with Chapter 21 for Monday, 02-07.  The SHUSH Test for the last unit will be given on Thursday, 02-10-11 at 7:15 AM in the Theater.  Please see the calendar and Key Terms for course of study details.
