AP Calculus AB - Implicit Differentiation, and Derivatives of Inverses, Exponentials, and Logs

Friday, 10/28: Students learned the method of implicit differentiation.  HW: page 162: 1-29 odd.

Monday, 10/31: HW: page 162: 2-30 even.  This is the last day we will work on this so make sure you practice.

Accelerated Math II - Logarithmic Functions

Friday, 10/28:  Students learned how to write logarithmic equations to/from exponential form; evaluate logarithms without using a calculator; simplify expressions using inverse properties; and find the inverse of an exponential and/or logarithmic function.  HW: Practice A worksheet

Monday, 10/31: We looked at transformations of generic functions and the graphed logarithmic functions.  HW: Math III book, page 153: 1-9 odd and 10; page 154: 1-13 odd and 12. 

Tuesday, 11/1: Students were discovering some properties of logs but did not get an opportunity to practice any.  If is VERY important that they read the examples in the section prior to attemting the homework.  HW: Math III book, page 157: 1-20 all and page 158: 1-17 odd.

Wednesday, 11/2: Using the properties of logs, we worked on evaluating logs when given in terms of m and k. 

Thursday, 11/3: More practice on using properties of logs  HW: complete the odds on both sides of the worksheet.  Download Properties of Logs Practice B and C with answers

Friday, 11/4: We discussed the busy schedule for the upcoming week and further detail is noted on the specific says below. Students began learning strategies to solve equations using logarithms.  Strategies used so far include: 1)change the form and then use the change of base propertiy; 2) use the property that if log x = log y, then x=y (both sides must be written in the same base to use this); 3)condense one or both sides of the equation and then use previous properties. 

Monday, 11/7: Short QUIZ on properties of logarithms - changing forms, expanding, condensing, evaluating WITHOUT a calculator.  We will continue solving equations using logarithms after the quiz.  Attached is a sample ASE quiz.  This is only a sample and does not include changing forms and evaluating.  Download Acc Math II ASE Quiz Properties of Logarithms

Tuesday, 11/8: No school for students

Wednesday, 11/9: MIDTERM over Right Triangle Trig., Exponential Functions, and Compositions and Inverses.  The midterm counts as a test grade and CAN replace your lowest test score if higher.  You must complete the midterm review sheet to be eligible for replacement.  Attached is the review worksheet. Thursday, 11/10: BENCHMARK test over Circles and Spheres and Statistics.  This test will not be counted as a grade but is a preview of concepts that will be on the Math II EOCT.  It is suggested that you review your circles and spheres by 1)working the review worksheet handed out on Friday Download Circle and Sphere EOCT Review; 2) review the examples in your Math II book; and 3) work pages 33-38 of the test prep workbook you received a few weeks ago.

Accelerated Math II - Sequences, Combinations, Compositions, & Inverses

Tuesday, 10/11: We introduced combinations and compositions of functions today.  Homework is in your Math II book: work multiples of 3 from both p114 and p115.  2nd period should work the front side of the worksheet handed out in class for homework on Wednesday. 

Wednesday, 10/12: PSAT today.  2nd period did not meet and 3rd & 6th periods were shortened.  Homework is to work the front side of the worksheet handed out in class. 

Thursday, 10/20:  Quiz tomorrow.  Attached are answers to worksheets given out the past few days. Download Answers to various worksheets on combinations, compositions and inverses  Unit test scheduled for Thursday 10/27. 

Friday, 10/21: For homework, students are to work the front and back of the first page of the worksheet packet given out today after the quiz.  Since the pep rally went over, students in 2nd period took only half the quiz and will finish the quiz in about 20 minutes on Monday.

AP Calculus AB - Differentiation Rules

During this unit, students will learn the power rule, product and quotient rule and the chain rule.  Students will also learn the derivatives of e^x and the six trig functions. 

Friday, 9/30:  After a homework quiz, it was very evident that students need to learn their unit circle values all over and memorize them.  We looked at how the unit circle is developed based on the different triangle families and reinfoced that there are really only about 10 to 15 values worth memorizing.  Unfortunately we cannot move forward until students demonstrate better knowledge of unit circle values.  There will be a timed unit circle quiz on Monday on which there will be 30 questions on evaluating.  I would suggest practicing the radian angles as degrees are rarely, if ever, used in calculus.
