Welcome! I hope you all had a wonderful summer and I also hope you all liked our summer reading selection, THE YEAR 1000. I thought it was really interesting, and a fairly easy read, too - I hope you found the it to be the same :) I especially liked how it is filled with little tidbits - I love the little facts that I'd normally never think about. Okay, on with the first week!
Mon (8/15)
** This will be a typical first day of school class - we'll introduce ourselves, look at the syllabus, I'll look at your transcripts, all that normal stuff - the one thing that WON'T be like every other class you'll have all day is that you'll get your partner for the VERY FIRST PROJECT OF THE YEAR! Yep, that's right - we're going to hit the ground running. You'll even have a little homework tonight (yes, I know... you're shocked by that) - you'll need to re-read the chapter for the your month of the Julius Work Calendar.
** It's probably worth mentioning here that this project will be the first official HBL work I see from you - you should be careful to make the impression that you want to make, do you know what I mean?
Need the handout and link? Here it is! :)

Tue and Wed (8/16 - 8/17)
** You and your partner will have time in class for these two days to plan your presentation and create your calendar page - at the end of each day you WILL BE REQUIRED to submit a progress update to me and you'll have to tell me your research topic BEFORE THE END OF CLASS ON TUESDAY (once a topic is taken, no other group can use it) - I'll be watching your progress, but I want to see how you evaluate yourself. On Tuesday night you should do the bulk of the research required for your presentation so that you and your partner will have the most time to plan everything (or get a new plan if necessary). Remember - I'll be very happy to suggest research topics that would be appropriate for your month.
Thur (8/18)
** You will have TEN (10) minutes with your partner to put any and all finishing touches on your calendar page and presentation. ALL written work, for every single group (yes, even if you are not sharing today) is DUE AT THE END OF THE TEN MINUTE GROUP TIME.
** We'll begin with group one - the only folks to not have a real month, we'll hear all about the calendar and the English spirit, then we'll start with January and move ahead. I would anticipate getting through at least June and probably July today.
Fri (8/19)
** We'll finish up the Calendar presentations today - I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys took from the book - you know, honestly, I thought THE YEAR 1000 was a pretty interesting little read :) Even if you didn't like it you're happy it was short, right?
Preview for next week:
1. We'll be doing some baseline evaluations on your grammar and writing skills, and then we'll get straight into our Anglo-Saxon study :) Which reminds me - you need to decide if you want to buy a copy of BEOWULF or if you want to check one out - we have loads to check out to you, but if you are a "write in the book" kind of student (like me!) then you'll need to get your own - if you DO decide to get one, please, please, please make sure you get the Burton Raffel version (and :) do NOT even think of mentioning that ridiculous movie to me...). Oh, and yes - I know that BEOWULF is a free kindle download, but it's not the right translation - it won't work, sorry -- I agree, free is best, but this time it won't work.
Well, you made it to the end of your first week of school! How'd you do? Are you going to have to sleep all weekend to catch up? I hope you'll all just relax and enjoy the year!
