New Grade Contract for classes.

Students will contract for the grade they want to receive. Only a grade of A,B, or C is allowed. All criteria for the grade must be met otherwise a grade of incomplete is given until the required work is made up in the allotted time frame. This is the yellow form that went home at the beginning of the semester.

Final Exams for Spring '09

The final exam for all Engineering classes will be in the form of a "science fair" project but will deal with Engineering. The project will be in the form of a display, technical report, data, model and graphics, etc. I will send out a spec sheet later in the semester but students should start now on planning and research.

West Point Bridge Builder

Please download this free software from West Point. In addition to being used in our classroom, there is also a national contest that students can enter on their own. This program is great for students and parents- too!

1. Up to fifteen (15) current events, 10 points each, summarized and presented to class, one due every Friday, starting 2nd week of semester. Teacher will explain details to students. See "Late Work Policy" also.

2. Textbook "Engineering Your Future" is housed in classroom. Assignments and readings from this text will be done in class.

VIDEOS:  Junkyard Wars, Mythbusters, Engineering Marvels, numerous TLC videos and others related to engineering. We may occasionally view other curriculum-related movies or movie clips, none of which will exceed a PG-13 rating. Your signature on this syllabus indicates permission for your student to view these movies.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

See materials list on separate handout.

ATTENDANCE AND MAKE-UP POLICY:

Any student who is present and actively participates is more likely to be successful; however, if a student is absent, he/she has one day for each day of excused absence to make up the work.  (For example, a student absent 2 days would have 2 days to make-up the work.)  Students are responsible for asking their teachers for the make-up work. A student with an unexcused absence may ask for assignments and may choose to complete them in order to keep up with the class; however, the teacher is under no obligation to grade the work.

LATE WORK POLICY:

All late work must be competed and submitted according to handbook policy. Current events will be accepted one school day (Monday), after the due date for 1/2 credit only, unless the absence is excused, then full credit given. They can only be turned in one day late (due on Friday, can be turned in late on Monday). They cannot be presented to class if late and must be a well written summary for the half credit. Excused absence can turn in for full credit- if well summarized. 10 points each.

TARDY POLICY:

If tardy, excused or unexcused, student will scan ID card at tardy table location. Tardy card will be

printed and taken to corresponding class/teacher. See student handbook for policy.

EXTRA HELP: Teacher available before and after school if notified and appointment is made.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

Cheating is considered a serious matter.  The parents of a student who has been involved in cheating will be notified and the student will receive a grade of zero for the test or evaluation period, and a grade of U in conduct.

For this course, cheating is defined as, but is not limited to, the following acts:

·         Copying anyone's answers to questions, exercises, study guides, class work or homework assignments

·         Taking any information verbatim from any source, including the Internet, without giving proper credit to the author, or rearranging the order of words and/or changing some words as written by the author and claiming the work as his or her own, i.e., plagiarism.

·         Looking onto another student's paper during a test or quiz.

·         Having available any study notes or other test aids during a test or quiz without the teacher's permission.

·         Collaborating on assignments when independent work is expected.

·         Students displaying cell phones during tests and/or quizzes will have their cell phones confiscated, and will be given a zero for that test or quiz.
