All of the final projects are well underway. The students have a fairly short time to work on these as the end of the semester draws near. With this project they are completely in charge of their solutions as they approach the construction based on their designs. This project allows them to take into consideration all the techniques they have learned and even combine techniques to achieve the desired result.
Ceramics A:
Finals will be an alteration of their Art History recreation based on what they see when they look at the pot. As I told them, "look beyond the surface, a set of large handles could be ears or the foot of a goblet could be dragon claws". In some case they are taking a simple low relief and creating a larger sculptural form of the object showing it from all sides. Some great ideas are flowing and the work is progressing quickly.
Advanced Ceramics:
The students are designing their own final for the more advanced classes. They were given a number of choices based on their level of skill and have the opportunity to create something that interests them. We have several doing a series of pieces such as mugs or plates that tie together through design elements and we have a few that are creating larger sculptural pieces. Other than having their ideas approved the students have autonomy regarding the construction of their project.
Reluctantly the time has come for me to return control of classes back to Mrs. Lowe. It has been my pleasure and a real honor to work with your students here at Lassiter. I have learned so much from them in the short time I have been here and hopefully they have learned as much from me. Over the next couple of weeks Mrs. Lowe will take the classes back as our schedules permit. She has taken back our third and fourth period classes already but I will still be there to aid the students with their projects. My last day here at Lassiter will be May 6th but Mrs. Lowe has given me permission to come back for a visit anytime so I will get to see the work when it is finished.
