Perspective

The value scale still life that we have been working is nearly finished and those that have not finished yet have the option to work on it at home or after they complete the new assignment.

This week the Comprehensive art class is moving forward with a new assignment dealing with one and two point perspective. There will be a homework packet that they will work on in class and should bring home to work on over the next week. It will be do the Monday we return from Spring break but I doubt that anyone will not finish this week. This assignment leads into a cityscape drawn in two point perspective. The students will learn about several Renaissance artists Francesca, Brunelleschi and Massacio and see how they used perspective to create their work.

Moving closer to finals

Time in ceramics is running short as we approach Spring break. We will be taking a look at the options for our final assignments on Friday.

Ceramics A should be done with their teapots and their art history assignment by Friday. The teapots went well and the students were really thinking outside the box. It was great to see what they came up with. Their Art history assignment is to take a sculpture or pot from antiquity and recreate it in exacting detail. This will lead into their final project that will be the essence of the piece they duplicated but it will then be altered in some way to create an entirely new piece.

The advanced ceramics students are finished with their black pots and they will be fired over Spring break. The new assignment for most is to take a master painter's work, such as Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, etc., and create a pot that interprets the piece and includes their rendition of the painting.

By the end of the semester all of the advanced students will have had a opportunity to try throwing on the wheel and hopefully will enjoy the experience. The wheel can be difficult to master but can also afford them the chance to make some really impressive work.

Photography

Mr. Revill, our student teacher, will be taking over the class this week. I will be in the darkroom with the last group of students needing to make enlargements while the students in class are working on uploading photos from shooting Mr. Revill in his armor.

Students are also needing to shoot their famous photographer photos outside of class this week when it stops raining.

This week and immediately after Spring Break, students will be doing scanner art. They are assigned a day to use the scanners in class. Students saw great examples of this project on Friday and are to be planning out their idea and gathering items.

 We are also planning the final project already, seems like the time is going too fast. The students will have the choice of a couple of different assignments including an alphabet project find the letters of the alphabet in their world and a photo narrative telling a story with photography. Both of these would be displayed in a series of mounted prints or in a coffee table book.

Comprehensive Art

Students are continuing their value project of still life forms. The students are finding out how time consuming it is. They are looking great and well worth the time.

 

Photography

Photo students enjoyed shooting photos of Mr. Revill in his armor last week. This week, we will finish the mixed media projects and choose our photos for the Pace Academy Photo competition. We will also shoot a few digital shots of Mr. Revill's armor set up in the room under photo flood lights.

 

Ceramics

Ceramics students are to complete all current projects before spring break. We will explain the choices for the final project before the break which will give the students time to plan out their project. Upon return from spring break, students will begin working on the final.

The kilns are being fired with our burnished clay pots as the students finish. They will be pit fired soon.

I wanted to thank my students and many parents who have been so kind as to send their condolences during the past few weeks with my mother-in-law and father passing away. My Lassiter family has been tremendously helpful during this painful time and my students have just been overwhelmingly supportive. Now, things can get back on track.
