This Week: We'll continue with the group annotation assignment of your summer reading. On Thursday we will reflect on and evaluate the AP in-class essay you wrote the first week. On Friday we'll have a seminar discussion of your first poetry response.

This Week: Thanks so much for being flexible last week as classes continued to shift in period, number, teacher and location. It has been great getting to know all of you, although Monday's sharing of your "Theme for English AP" will help me know you even better. On Tuesday you will begin your How to Read Literature Like a Professor presentations. On Thursday you should have your copy of your summer reading novel in class.

AP Literature

Welcome back! I hope you had a restful summer and are now ready, as seniors, to hone your reading, speaking, thinking, and writing skills. Without a doubt, AP literature will prepare you for the rigors and demands of college. It is a challenging course and I am glad you have decided to embrace the challenge!

This Week: Beyond the formalities of the first day, the week is devoted to getting to know each other as well as to addressing summer reading assignments. And of course we will find a little time for some poetry!

Monday, August 15th:

• Course overview: syllabus, policies, and what you can expect
• Questionnaire/interest survey
• A few words about your summer reading

Tuesday, August 16th:

• Annotating a text: Read and discuss Adler's "How to Mark a Book"
• Langston Hughes' "Theme for English B"--composing your own "Theme for English AP"

Wednesday, August 17th:

• How to Read Literature Like a Professor--Group project guidelines, expectations, and rubric
• Work in groups to prepare for presentation--Presentations begin Tuesday, 8/23

Thursday, August 18th:

• AP essay diagnostic writing--Brush's "Birthday Party"

Friday, August 19th:

• Work in groups to prepare for presentation--Presentations begin Tuesday, 8/23
