Next week-Socratic Seminar 

Prepare 5 questions you would like to discuss during the Seminar.  Type your questions and type the answers to 4 of the questions.  The 5th question could be something you would like to discuss, but really don't have the answer for.  None of your questions can be about how you FEEL about something.  I will expect questions that help us to ANALYZE the themes, style, motifs, characters, tone, motivations, etc.

Also, for Monday, fill out your Soldiers sheet and your Vietnam sheet.

If you're entering, the Reflections contest entries are due today, Friday.

Writing Contest Opportunity

The PTA Reflections contest is now going on.  There is scholarship money for winners, so go to www.PTAreflections.org for rules and forms.  The topic this year is "Together We Can."  Entries are due to the front office by Friday, Oct. 8th.

Welcome back from Fall Break!

I'm changing our schedule a little because of the GHSWT, so here it is:

Monday-talk about the Writing Exam.  I'll show you some examples of good papers from last year.  If you were absent today, I put a powerpoint about the Writing Exam on this website.  On the left side, scroll down to Georgia Writing Test Powerpoint.  You should review the information and let me know if you have questions.

Tuesday-practice for the exam

Wednesday-Report to Advisement, then go to testing location.  Testing is from 8:36 until about 10:40.  Good luck!

Your poem is due today.  Remember 24 lines minimum, 2 stanzas, must have a shift from the tangible things you carry to the intangible thngs you carry.  Type the poem, print a copy for me AND bring a copy on your flash drive.

Read through the chapter called "The Dentist" in TTTC.

Thursday-in-class writing.  You will answer your own synthesis question.

Friday-Vocabulary quiz #5.

Week of 9/13

This is week #4 for Vocabulary.  Bring THE THINGS THEY CARRIED with you every day.  It is one of those things you must carry   :)

Monday-Essay on Nature due, typed, MLA format  Here's the assignment, in case you need it: 

       Write your own short essay entitled “On Nature.”  You must include a short narrative of an incident that happened  to you or that you observed (use Thoreau's story of the loon, or the story of the ant war, or the story of the growing of beans as your model).

Thursday-Synthesis packet due.  Scroll down for the templates and the directions.  Make sure you have read through Chapter 4 --"On the Rainey River" by tomorrow.

Friday-Vocab. quiz #4 and expect a quiz on TTTC.

This is Week #3 for Vocabulary.   Find a copy of THE THINGS THEY CARRIED by Tim O'Brien by Friday.

Tues. & Wed.-We will take a look at some of the literature from the Transcendentalists.  From the old American Lit. books, read pages 216-226 on Emerson and pages 230-244 on Thoreau.

Wed- 7:30 am RETEST in the Theater.  If you would like to improve your grade on the American Lit. overview, study and then show up on time.  The format will be the same as the original test.

Thurs.-Make sure all 9 of your sources are in your folder.  We will begin to work on them in class today.  We'll also do some in-class writing today on Emerson/Thoreau.

Fri.-Vocab. quiz #3.  Bring THE THINGS THEY CARRIED to class today.  Your short essay on Nature is due on Monday.  It must be typed, MLA format.
