Week of 8/30

Continuing our work with the literary periods, we are going to take a look at some sample multiple-choice passages and questions for the AP Language exam.  On Monday we will read "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" by Jonathan Edwards and answer the multiple-choice.  On Tuesday, we will do the same with Patrick Henry.

Wednesday-be prepared to take the test on Literary Periods.  I will use the handouts from your class to make out your test.

Thursday-we will go over the multiple choice questions you answered early in the week.

Friday-Vocabulary Week #2 quiz.

Week of 8/23

This is Presentation Week.  We will present till finished, hopefully Thursday. 

This is also your first Vocabulary week.  The list for this semester is on the left side of this website; it says "Vocabulary List-1st Semester."   Print a copy.  Your words for this week are in, of course, Week #1.  You are required to make IN YOUR OWN HANDWRITING a 3 x 5 vocabulary card for each word.  On the front, put the word (and its correct pronunciation--if you need it).  On the back, put the definition and use the word in a complete, correct sentence that shows understanding of the word.  I recommend making the cards early in the week so that you have time to learn the words.  We will normally have a quiz every Friday, but as I told you, this week it will be on THURSDAY.  Bring your cards to turn in.  When you get to class on THURSDAY, we will review the words.  Immediately afterward, you will turn in your cards and we will have the quiz.  I will call out 3 words at random.  You will write the word, spelled correctly, define the word, and use it correctly in a sentence that shows me that you understand the word.  This will be a 100 point quiz grade.  10 points for spelling (x 3), 10 for definition (x3), 10 for sentence (x3), 10 points for complete cards.  The words accumulate each week, so on week #2 you are responsible for weeks 1 & 2, etc.

2 sources are due Friday for your issue.

Bring your PATTERNS book to class on Friday.

Week of 8/16

Monday-8/16-Wednesday 8/18

We are going to do some group presentations on an overview of American Lit.   Monday you will be assigned to a group and we will get started.  Here is the assignment

On Tuesday we will be in the English Lab.  On Wednesday we will return to the classroom to finish.

Need extra points on your DWC test grade?  Here's an opportunity.  Some of your Language poems that we wrote in class were really clever.  Pick yours up from me and work on it.  Yurn it into a mini-poster (8 1/2 x 11)--increase the font, add background, clip art, border, etc.  If it is AWESOME, I'll display it outside the classroom and add 5 points to that test grade.  Due Friday.

Begin presentations.

Friday 8/20

Continue presentations.  3 sources due today for the issue that you are following.  One must be a visual-cartoon, chart, graph, photo, etc.

Language poem due.

We're taking a break from summer reading to have some discussion about language.  We'll start with a poem and work our way into some exercises that  will make you more conscious of the importance of and ever-changing nature of language.  After all, that is what this class is all about!

Wednesday, 8/11 and Thursday 8/12

Back to THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY.  Bring your book to class; I have NO EXTRAS.  On these two days you will write in class about characters and style. You may use your books and notes.

Friday, 8/13

Today will be our first vocabulary day.  You will work with the words you identified from DWC.  You should have 2 sources on your "issue" to turn in.  Write the bibliographic information on the source.  Also, I will assign you to a group for work next week.  More on that later.
