Jan. 25-29, 2010

Monday - I will check the Reading Journal.  Students will take the Unit 3 pre-test.  We will work on a spelling exercise. We will start to read the "Hazda" article and students will take notes. 

Tuesday  -  Students will finish reading the article and take notes.  Then they will write a summary of the article.

Wednesday - Students will watch Rain in a Dry Land and discuss it. 

Thursday - Students will continue to watch the DVD.

Friday - Students will discuss exile and refugees.  Then they will write about a theme in the article and DVD from this week.

Jan. 25-29, 2010

Monday - I'll check the homework.  Then students will read "Women's Work" and discuss the poem.  I will explain the concept of figurative language. Students will look for metaphors and similes.  Students will answer the questions in the workbook and will fill out a  Poetry Analysis worksheet.

Tuesday - We will listen to "The Raven" and then read it.  The class will analyze the rhyme scheme.  Students will fill out a Poetry Analysis sheet on the poem.

Wednesday - Students will do the Poetry Sorting Boards to work with small poems.

Thursday - Students will make alliteration couplets with their own names.  Students will find a poem to memorize and will begin the task. 

Homework - Be ready to recite the poem next Tuesday.

Friday - In pairs,students will find sound devices, figurative language and imagery in the newspaper.  They will share their findings.

I was absent on Tuesday.  Students read "What's for Breakfast?" and answered the questions in the packet.  On Wednesday, we discussed the imagery in "A Walk to the Jetty".  Then students wrote a description of a place and a memory associated with that place, using imagery.  On Thursday, students rewrote their summaries of "A Walk to the Jetty".  Then today we went over the questions in the workbook on "A Walk...".  We also read "Memory" and discussed the images.

Homework:  Finish the questions on "Memory" on pp. 161-162.

Tuesday - Take the vocabulary quiz.  List memories in "A Walk to the Jetty".  Give details about Annie's memory of the glasses and analyze to which senses these appeal.  Write a description of a place and its memory from your past.

Wednesday - Read "Hazda" article and write a summary.

Jan. 19-22, 2010

Tuesday - List memories in "Walk to the Jetty".  Give details about Annie's memory of her glasses and list the senses to which the details appeal. Then write about own memory of a place and its memory.

Wednesday - Read "Memory" on p. 161 in the lit workbook and answer the questions.  Also read "Women's Work" on p. 165 and answer questions. 

Thursday - Discuss sound devices and figurative language.  Find examples in the two poems.  Fill out the Poetry Analysis charts.

Friday- Listen to "The Raven" and discuss meaning.  Then analyze in pairs and put info on chart.

 

January 11-15, 2010

Monday  - Work on the vocab. definitions for the words from the newspaper article and Lesson 13.

Tuesday - Listen to "A Walk to the Jetty".  Write a summary of the story in the Reading Journal.

Wednesday - Read the story from Tuesday in the Reader's Companion.  Answer the questions in the sidebars.

Homework - Answer the questions on pp. 9-11 about "A Walk to the Jetty".

Thursday - Check the workbook pages about the story.  Work on a vocab. exercise and review for the quiz.

Friday - Take the vocab. quiz.  Write about images from your native land.

Jan. 11-15, 2009

Monday - Discuss the definitions of the vocab. in the 504 ...Words vocab. workbook. Discuss the tone of the article about the White House intruder and find the connotations of some of the vocab. words.

Tuesday - Listen to "A Walk to the Jetty".  Write a short summary of the story. 

Wednesday - Take the Benchmark Test.

Thursday - Read "A Walk to the Jetty" in the Reader's Companion and answer the questions on the sidebars and at the end of the story.  Work on a vocab. review exercise.  Play a vocab. game.

Friday  - Take the vocab. quiz.  Write about a scene from your home country.

January 5-8, 2009

Tuesday - We discussed transcripts and graduation requirements. 

Wednesday -  We read an article about the movie Avatar and discussed its meaning.  We highlighted words we didn''t know. 

Thursday - We finished the article and highlighted more vocabulary words.

Friday - We will look up the definitions to the words.  Then we will discuss the tone of the article and look at connotations and denotations of our words.  We will also read the vocab. words in tLesson 13 of the vocab. book and choose enough to make 20 words.  The vocab. quiz will be next Friday.

 

January 5-8, 2009

Tuesday - We looked through the newspaper to find an article to read.  Then we read the article, choosing words we didn't know to look up later.  We discussed the article's meaning.

Wednesday - We continued reading and discussing the article.

Thursday - We looked up the 8 words from the article.  Then we began to read the words, their definitions, and sentences in the vocab. book, Lesson 1.  We will have a vocab. quiz next Friday over the words from the article and Lesson 1 in the vocab. book.

Friday - We will discuss the tone of the article and talk about the connotations and denotations of the words.  We will finish reading the Lesson 1 words and will do the first exercise.
