Welcome to ESOL at Lassiter High School in 2009!  I am looking forward to our year together, learning language and learning about each other!

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:

Ninth Lit:  How do authors vary their writing according to their purposes and audiences?

Multicultural Lit:  How does an individual's background affect his or her view of the world?

Tenth Lit:  What are some themes shared by all people throughout time?

Nov. 9-13, 2009

Monday - Work on filling in the short story elements on the chart.  The test over the stories will be on Friday.

Tuesday - Go over the original short story assignment sheet.  Work on an original short story about one of the Harris Burdick pictures.  The story will be due on next Monday.

Wednesday - Read the story "There Will Come Soft Rains" and answer the questions about it.

Homework - Answer the "w" questions in your Reading Journal about the story.

Thursday - Read a story of your choice.  Add it to the chart.  Review for the test on Friday.

Friday - Take the test over the short stories.

Nov. 9-13, 2009

Monday - Work on original short stories, using the Harris Burdick pictures.  The paper will be due Monday, Nov. 16.

Homework - Answer the questions at the end of "The Most Dangerous Game".

Tuesday - Write in the Reading Journals the answers to the "w" questions about "The Most Dangerous Game".  Watch clips from the movie.

Wednesday - Work on the chart of plot elements of the stories we've read.  Begin reading "The Necklace".

Thursday- Finish reading "The Necklace". 

Friday - Watch "The Necklace".

 

 

Nov. 2-6, 2009

Monday - Watch the one-act play performed by the Drama Club.

Tuesday - No school.

Wednesday - Write a response to the one-act play in the Reading Journal.  Listen to and discuss "The Open Window".

Homework - Finish the response to the play.

Thursday - I check the Reading Journal.  Listen to and read "The Masque of the Red Death".  Do the questions at the end of the workbook.  Also, map the plot of the story in the Reading Journal.

Friday - Begin the Harris Burdick picture assignment.  (Write an original short story.)

Nov. 2-6, 2009

Monday - Watch the one-act play performed by the Drama Club.

Tuesday - No school.

Wednesday and Thursday - Review literary vocabulary for the GHSGT.  Place the terms into categories.  Then do a practice test on the USA Test Prep website.

Friday - Review vocabularyfor the quiz on Monday.  Read and analyze poems.  Write a poem.

Standards:  RL 1, RL 2, RC 3, W 1, LSV 1.

 

November 2-6, 2009

Monday - Watch the one-act play performed by the Drama Club.

Tuesday - No school.

Wednesday - Discuss and write your summary and opinions about the one-act play in the Reading Journal.  Read and listen to "The Most Dangerous Game".

Thursday -  Write a summary of the story in the Reading Journal and answer the questions at the end.

Friday - Begin the writing assignment by looking at the pictures on the wall and filling out the chart of your plot.  The paper will be due next Friday, Nov. 13.

October 26-30, 2009

Monday - Take the pre-test on short stories.  Discuss the plot elements.  Chart the plot elements for "The Interlopers".  Read and discuss "A Walk to the Jetty". 

Homework - Finish the story and answer the questions on p. 9-11.

Tuesday - I check the homework. Chart the plot of "A Walk to the Jetty".  Write about your arrival in the U.S.  Review vocab.

Homework - The vocab. quiz is on Friday.

Wednesday - Read "The Open Window" and answer questions on sidebars and at the end.

Thursday - Answer the "w" questions about "The Open Window" in your Reading Journal.  Review vocab. for the quiz tomorrow.

Friday - Take the vocab. quiz.  Read "The Masque of the Red Death" and chart the plot elements.

October 26-30, 2009

Monday - Fill out a Venn diagram of two characters in The Ugly American.  Work on a literary terms crossword puzzle. 

Homework - The test on The Ugly American and Guns, Germs and Steel will be on Wednesday.  The vocab. quiz will be on Friday.

Tuesday  - Work on vocab. definitions.  Work on a study sheet for the test. 

Wednesday - Take the test on The Ugly American and Guns, Germs, and Steel.

Thursday - Read a newspaper article and answer the "w" questions.  Review for the vocab. quiz.

Friday - Take the vocab. quiz.  Read the article about driving distractions and answer the critical thinking questions.

October 26-30, 2009

Monday - Take the pre-test on short stories.  Read and listen to "The Cask of Amontillado".  Discuss the conflict.

Homework - The vocab. quiz will be on Friday. 

Tuesday - Review vocab. words.  Discuss plot terms and model finding the plot elements for "The Interlopers".  Students plot the elements of "The Cask of Amontillado".  Re-read "Cask...", answering together the sidebar questions.   Answer the "w" questions in the Reading Journal, as well as the questions at the end of the story in the workbook. 

Wednesday - Read and listen to "The Most Dangerous Game".  Discuss characters.  Draw plot diagram in Reading Journal.

Thursday - Fill in Venn diagram about characters.  Review vocabulary.

Friday - Take the vocab. quiz.  Write a summary of "The Most Dangerous Game".  Begin the Harris Burdick Short Story Assignment.

Revised Oct. 22-23, 2009

Thursday - I checked the questions on pp. 71-75 about "The Interlopers".  Students wrote the answers to "who?", "what?", "where?", etc.  in their Reading Journals.  We took the vision and hearing screening.

Friday - Take the fiction pre-test.  Get vocabulary words and define them.  The quiz will be next Friday.

Thursday -  We read and discussed chapter 17. 

Homework - Answer the "w" and "h" questions about chapter 17 in the novel.

Friday - Read chapter 18 and discuss.  Then draw a Venn diagram, comparing and contrasting two characters.
