Moving to www.onlinelassiter.org

Please click on the link to go to my updated website at www.onlinelassiter.org.

This change will allow for students and parents to enroll and be e-mailed forum (blog) updates each time new items are posted.  It will also allow students to take practice quizzes, link to informative websites, and participate in discussion forums.  In addition, it will provide me with immediate feedback on student performance and knowledge, along with analyses on student's strengths and weaknesses.

When you go to the new site, simply click on English 08-09 and then on your class.  Typical blog entries are now titled "news forum" and those will be input weekly.  Supplemental unit resources (websites, quizzes, etc.) will be posted by week, and handouts will be available for download through the category "handouts" at the top of my home page.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about this move.  You may e-mail me at diana.bishop@cobbk12.org.

Additions to the week - American Lit and Honors American Lit

HW for tonight (if not finished in class), response questions for "Minister's Black Veil".  If you didn't bring your book home, you can probably find this story on-line.

For Friday:  Study Vocab 6 terms handed out in class today.

“The Minister’s Black Veil” Response Questions

  1. Even if

    Hawthorne

hadn’t stated that this story is a parable, you should be able to determine so on your own.  What makes this a parable?  What is a parabolic message?  Answer both parts of this question.
  2. Why didn’t Mr. Hooper tell the congregation why he was wearing the veil?  Why does the congregation ask him why he wore it?  Two parts:  answer both!
  3. Interpret how Mr. Hooper became an “efficient” minister:  “By the aid of his mysterious emblem—for there was no other apparent cause – he became a man of awful power over souls that were in agony for sin.  His converts always regarded him with a dread peculiar to themselves, affirming, though but figuratively, that, before he brought them to celestial light, they had been with him behind the black veil.  It’s gloom, indeed, enabled him to sympathize with all dark affections” (345).
  4. Quote a sentence that shows a Dark Romantic perspective. Remember quotes require lead-ins (sentences that come before a quote).  See example in number 3.  Then explain two ways your quotation is Dark Romantic.
  5. What does the veil symbolize?  Besides Mr. Hooper’s saying it is a symbol, how do you know it is a symbol?  Answer both parts.
