I'm posting my syllabus below so parents and students are reminded of what is and is not acceptable in class.
NovaNET meets in rm. 414 across the hall from the clinic. The lab opens daily at 7:45 a.m. so students who are highly motivated to move forward in their program can get a head start each day on their work.
ASE registration was last week during advisement, and ASE begins on Aug. 29, next Monday. ASE is a 30 minute academic enrichment session meeting three days a week, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday so students have extra time in class to work and ask questions. NovaNET students taking math and science courses were encouraged to take the appropriate ASE for their NovaNET courses so they would have a dedicated subject area teacher to support them in the class they have previously failed.

Course description: NovaNET is designed to help students recover credit(s) from previously attempted classes and to academically make up the credits necessary for graduation. Instruction is delived via computer with additional offline reading and writing for English classes. Packets of this curriculum will be delivered after Labor Day, and students must check out the appropriate textbook for their English class. Students are encouraged to leave this book at home for use at night, on weekends, and other occasions when the student is otherwise not at school because of illness or disciplinary reasons. Any student may checkout a text, if available, for his course; texts are required only for English classes.
Note: The NCAA does not accept NovaNET recovery of credit.
Not all classes are available on NovaNET; some courses must be made up in the regular classroom, summer school, night school, or e-high school.
How it works: NovaNET enrollment is a privilege. Behavior problems such as improper use of Internet, cell phone use, talking, misbehavior, etc. may result in time off the computer. The class period cannot be used for any other purpose than NovaNET. If the student is designated off the computer and not allowed to log on, silent study of materials already brought to class is the only option. Multiple infractions may result in ISS or expulsion from the course. To use the program successfully, students must be motivated to remain on task. The instructor is present only as a facilitator who gives assistance when necessary but does not instruct the class as a whole. Some NovaNET courses- English- require written work and reading that is not computer based. It is the student's responsibility to progress at a reasonable rate to complete credit recovery by the end of the semester. If the course is not completed by the end of the semester, credit cannot be earned and the student will receive a failing grade in accordance with Cobb County NovaNET policy.
Grading: EOCT courses: Post-test average: 85% EOCT: 15%* As of this year, some EOCT courses will move to 20%. If the student is in the 20% EOCT bracket, the Post-test average would count 80% to accommodate the 20% EOCT.
Pre-tests: Students must earn a score of 80% or higher to pass a module without taking lessons. If an 80 or above is earned on the pre-test, see the instructor to be moved forward to the next module. If the pre-test score is below 80, lessons in the module will be assigned to instruct the student and the post-test will be assigned after successful completion of those lessons. Students may not use any assistance of any kind on a pre-test as it as a test of their prior knowledge. If outside assistance is attempted, the instructor will assign a zero to the pre-test and assign all of the lessons for the module.
Working on Modules: As a students works on sections in a module as determined by pre-test scores, it is imperative that the student take notes. Note-taking helps the student focus on curriculum, helps them remember what they'e studied, and provides a resource for the post-test. Studnts are required to keep all notes in the designated folder in the room. While learning new material, students may receive help from textbooks, teachers, and other teacher-designated sources. Students are not allowed to print screens, copy and paste lessons from NovaNET onto a word document, or store information on a flash drive or other recording device. If this occurs, forfeit of computer rights may result. Students have access to a copy of their curriculum, a place to record pre- and post-test scores, and information regarding offline assignments if enrolled in an English class. The folders must remain in the room to protect the integrity of the curriculum, course, and be available for use in class daily.
Post-Tests: In order to complete a module, a post-test score of 80% or better is required. Notes that a student wrote during lessons are permitted as a reference/resource during the test-taking period. This is the only acceptable resource a student may call upon during testing. If outside assistance is sought during a post-test, a score of 0% will be assignmed and disciplinary action may be taken. If the post-test is close to 80% but not an 80%, the instructor can either reassign the post-test or consider the notes and possibly raise the grade to 80%, at the discretion of the instructor. If the post-test score is significantly lower than 80%, lessons for the module will likely be required for reassignment. Students may take a test up to 4 times to achieve an 80. The highest score will be recorded, and the grade will count toward the post-test average as recorded.
Materials: folder with paper or Cornell notes must be left in the room daily. Student will need a pen or pencil for taking notes. NovaNET approved calculators are to be checked out daily in class for use on coursework, and they are to be returned at the end of the hour. No recording devices are allowed; calculators with storage capacity are not allowed.
Attendance and make-up policy: a student who is present and actively participating in the NovaNET program is likely to be successful. Each student works at his/her own pace on modules, and the time for doing so is during this class period, ASE if enrolled, and in the morning from 7:45 a.m. until 8:15. No lunch time or time out of another class is available. Time lost in NovaNET due to absence for any reason is time lost and cannot be made up. Be mindful that the program is not available at home.
Tardy policy: To avoid being counted tardy, students must be seated and ready for class when the bell rings. If the student arrives after the tardy bell, he/she is to go directly to the late arrival system for a pass. No student will be admitted late without a pass. Unexcused tardies are subject to discipline referral and will take away the time available to the student to work on modules for that day.
Academic Integrity:
Cheating is considered a serious matter. The parents of a student who has been involved in cheating will be notified and the student will receive a zero for the work and a grade of U will be assigned for Conduct.
For this course, cheating is defined as, but is not limited to, the following acts:
- Copying anyone's answers to questions, exercises, study guides, class work or offline assignments;
- Taking any information verbatim from any source, including the Internet, without giving proper credit to the author, or rearranging the order of words an/or changing some of the words as written by the author and claiming the work as his/her own, i.e., plagiarism;
- Looking onto another student's computer/paper during a test or quiz;
- Having available any study notes or other test aids during a test or quiz without the teacher's permission;
- Collaborating on assignments when independent work is expected;
- Students diplaying cell phones during tests and/or quizzes will be given a zero for that test or quiz;
- Students are not allowed to use or listen to music or anthing else with headphones, earbuds, etc. during class time as per school policy. Exceptions are made for a few modules requiring audio instructions.
- Using any kind of recording device, flash drive, cell phone camera, etc. as a means of taking curriculum out of the room or for any other use.
