GPS Algebra Support Classes

We spent a few minutes reviewing Multiplying and Dividing Rational Expressions.  We completed one multiplication problem and one division problem together in class.  Both of these were from the Notetaking Guide.  We did # 1 on page 181 and # 3 on page 182.

You were then given a handout with the following problems on it:  # 5-11 from page 183 and # 14-17 from page 184 in the Notetaking Guide.  You had the rest of the class period to complete this assignment and turned it in at the end of class.

GPS Algebra Classes

The Unit 2 Test #1 was handed back and all questions were answered.

I then put up the solutions and answered questions for the first part of yesterday's homework assignment (page 173 # 1-6).  You were to have notebook paper out and write down all steps for the rest of yesterday's homework assignment (page 173 # 13-18).  I worked out all six of these step-by-step on the document camera with you in class.

I returned Monday's homework assignment (Multiplying and Dividing Rational Expressions Worksheet) that I graded for both completion and accuracy.  I gave you three points for each problem that you did or attempted (66 points total).  I then graded six of them for accuracy and these were worth an additional five points (30 points total).  The other four points were given to you for turning in a paper.  The problems that were graded for accuracy were # 3, 5, 7, 13, 15, and 17.  Three of them were on the front and were multiplication problems and the other three were on the back and were division problems.  

The homework assignment for today is to complete the Adding and Subracting Rational Expressions Worksheet. 

*As mentioned in class, this assignment will be collected tomorrow for a grade so make sure to complete it.  Remember that this is the second assignment over the same lesson as there were no new notes today.  Use the notes and homework assignment from yesterday to help you!

Tuesday, October 18th

GPS Algebra Support Classes

We worked today in our Notetaking Guide.  We began by reviewing Simplifying Rational Expressions.  You were to fill in the three vocabulary words (rational expression, excluded value, and simplest form of a rational expression) in your Notetaking Guide on page 175.

We went through # 1-3 on page 178 and # 16 and 20 on page 179 together in class.  You were given time in class to complete the following on your own:

Page 178 # 4-9 

Page 179 # 17 and 18 

 The solutions to these problems were given and all questions were answered.

We then reviewed Multiplying and Dividing Rational Expressions.  I did # 4 and 12 on page 183 as well as # 13 and 18 on page 184 with you in class.  You were told to be prepared tomorrow to complete # 5-11 on page 183 and # 14-17 on page 184 and turn in for a grade.

GPS Algebra Classes

Yesterday's homework assignment (Multiplyng and Dividing Rational Expressions) was collected and will be graded and returned later this week.

We went through notes on Adding and Subtracting Rational Expressions.  This material is covered in Lesson 3.10 on page 171 in the textbook.

The homework assignment for today is: Page 173 # 1-6, and 13-18 all.

*Remember to check the odd answers in the back of the textbook and redo any that you missed!

 

Monday, October 17th

GPS Algebra Support Classes

We reviewed factoring by writing the type of factoring and an example of each type in our Spiral Notebook.  The six types of factoring that should be included are:

1) GCF

2)  Grouping

3)  Trinomial with a Leading Coefficient of One

4)  Trinomial without a Leading Coefficient of One

5)  Difference of Squares

6)  Perfect Square Trinomial

We then used notebook paper to review Simplifying Rational Expressions, the lesson you learned in GPS Algebra on Friday.  We worked out five problems together in class.  You were given time to work on/finish the Simplify Rational Expressions Worksheet that was the homework assignment from Friday in GPS Algebra.  I also answered questions over both sections of this assignment.

GPS Algebra Classes

We went through notes on Multiplying and Dividing Rational Expressions.  This is Lesson 3.9, which begins on page 165 in the textbook.

I then used the document camera to go over the worked-out solutions to Friday's homework assignment, Simplifying Rational Expressions Worksheet.  All questions were answered.

The Multiplying and Dividing Rational Expressions Worksheet was handed out and we discussed how the first half is multiplying and the second half is dividing.  You were given the last few minutes of class to begin working on this assignment.

The homework assignment for today is to complete the Multiplying and Dividing Rational Expressions Worksheet.  Remember that # 1-11 are MULTIPLYING and # 12-22 are DIVIDING.

Friday, October 14th

GPS Algebra Support Classes

I began class by putting the solutions up to the second Practice On Factoring Worksheet you were given yesterday in class.  I answered any questions you had on this assignment.

I then gave you the third Practice On Factoring Worksheet to complete.  This was the last of the factoring worksheets and this one also consisted of ten problems.  I then went through and worked out all ten problems step-by-step.

The rest of the class period was spent on the six problem Factoring Assessment.  This will be returned to you in class on Monday.

You were given a copy of the Unit 2 Calendar (second half) and I went through this with you in detail.

We went through the notes on Simplifying Rational Expressions, which is Lesson 3.8.  This lesson begins on page 161 in the textbook.

I then handed out the Simplifying Rational Expressions Worksheet and completed # 7 and 25 with you, step-by-step.  You were given the last few minutes of class to work on this assignment.

The homework assignment for today is to complete the Simplifying Rational Expressions Worksheet. 

*Remember on the first section (# 1-12) you set the denominator equal to zero and solve for the variable.  On the second section (# 13-30) you FACTOR first and then SIMPLIFY.

GPS Algebra Support Classes

I began class by answering any questions you had over any material that we have covered so far in Unit 2.

I then went through a ten problem Practice On Factoring Worksheet with you, step-by-step, in class.  On the back of this worksheet we did one example of solving an equation by factoring.  Once we completed this assignment, I collected it.  I will be grading it for accuracy and will return this to you tomorrow in class.

I then gave you another ten problem Practicing On Factoring Worksheet to complete.  You were able to work quietly with other students on this assignment.  The worked-out solutions were put on the document camera for you before class ended.

*Remember that tomorrow you will have a six problem assessment over the different types of factoring.

When you entered the room there was a note on the document camera to pick up the warm up and begin.  The warm up assignment consisted of two problems that reviewed The Binomial Theorem and Pascal's Triangle.  You were given time to complete these problems and then I went over the solutions and answered questions.

The rest of the class period was spent reviewing for the Unit 2 Test #1 by answering questions.

The homework assignment for today is to study and prepare for the Unit 2 Test #1, which is tomorrow.

*Use your notes, homework assignments, review worksheets for both Quizzes, and your Quizzes (Unit 2 Quiz #1 and Unit 2 Quiz #2) to help you study…work out problems!

**Remember you can always use your textbook to do odd problems and then check your answers in the back of the book.

***Remember to bring your calculator to class tomorrow so you can use it for the test.

GPS Algebra Support Classes

We began class with reviewing Factoring by Grouping.  We used our Notetaking Guide to practice these types of problems.  On page 102, I completed # 1-3, 13 and 16 with you in class.  Your assignment was to complete # 4-12, 14, 15, and 17-21 on page 102.  The solutions were put on the document camera and all questions were answered.

We then reviewed yesterday's lesson on Solving Polynomial Equations by Factoring.  We went through the following for practice in class:

Page 103 # 28

Page 97 # 28 and 29

Page 92 # 16

Page 88 # 20

You were told that you will have a Factoring Assessment this Friday.  It will be six factoring problems and will be graded for accuracy.

GPS Algebra Classes

I went over the homework solutions from yesterday's assignment (the 12 problems on the back of the notes page) and answered all questions.

You were given the Review Worksheet for the Unit 2 Test #1.  I read over this entire handout with you and provided you with a few examples as we went through it.

The Quizzes (Unit 2 Quiz #2) were handed back.  Even though the correct answers were written on your Quiz for you, I still put up the worked-out solutions for you to see on the document camera.  All questions were answered.

The homework assignment for today is to study and prepare for the Unit 2 Test #1.

Monday, October 10th

GPS Algebra Support Classes

We practiced factoring Difference of Squares and Perfect Square Trinomials today.  In the Notetaking Guide on page 97, we went through # 1-4, 11, 13, and 16 together in class.  You were to complete # 5-10, 12, 14, 15, and 17-24 on your own.

The solutions to these problems were given in class and all questions were answered.

GPS Algebra Classes

You were given a handout with the Notes for Solving Polynomial Equations by Factoring.  We discussed the steps to follow to solve these equations and went through four examples that were included on the bottom half of the front of the notes page. 

We then discussed the 12 problems on the back of the notes page.  I went through and worked out # 6 and 9 with you step-by-step.  I emphasized the importance of showing all of your work and boxing in your answers for the remaining 10 problems.  You were given quite a bit of time to work on these problems in class.

The homework assignment is to complete all of the problems included on the back of the notes page.
