Monday, August 22nd

GPS Algebra Support Classes

I began class by collecting any signed syllabi that were brought in.  Remember these are due no later than this Friday (August 26th).

I also asked today in class if any student had not yet been issued a textbook.  Students who still needed to get a textbook were to write a pass and go to the book cage to get one checked out to them.

Today's class was spent previewing Unit 1: The Chance of Winning.

You were given a Statistics Vocabulary matching worksheet to complete.  We went throught the correct answers and discussed the vocabulary as well.

The notes and examples given in class today were to be written in your spiral notebook.

We then discussed the multiplication counting principle.  We went through the definition and then three examples.

We also talked about sample space, outcome values, and tree diagrams.  We looked at a tree diagram for tossing a penny and rolling a die.  We also discussed what the sample space for this example would be.

The next example provided you with the tree diagram of a family with three children and you had to provide the sample space.

Tomorrow we will begin class with an example where you have to create the tree diagram as well as provide the sample space by using your tree diagram.

GPS Algebra Classes

We went through a PowerPoint on Lesson 6.1: Use Counting Principles.  This lesson begins on page 338 in the textbook.

After we completed the notes, you were to clear your desk for an eight problem assessment over the review material from last week.  When you completed your assessment, you were to turn it in and begin working on today's homework assignment.

The homework assignment for today is: Page 340 # 1-13 odd.

*Because this is the first assignment out of the textbook, we discussed that every time you have an assignment out of the book, you must copy the problems from the book, show your work and then provide your answer. 

*Remember that your work must support your answer!

Friday, August 19th

GPS Algebra Support Classes

You were given back your group review assignment from yesterday.  I explained how it was graded and you were given an opportunity to get back in your same group from yesterday and check your paper from the answer key that I provided you with. 

*Recall that I only graded one paper per group so the rest of the group members had to check their paper for accuracy and discuss any that were missed with the rest of the group.

You were then given time to fill out a student information sheet.  We discussed what each section of the information sheet was asking for as well.  This was collected and will be filed for the semester.

We spent the rest of the time going over the GPS Algebra Support Syllabus.  This is on my blog if you need to reference it any time this school year.  You were given a copy of the last page of the syllabus.  A parent/guardian needs to read over the syllabus and fill out the page provided to you.  This handout needs to be brought back with your signature as well as a parent/guardian signature no later than Friday, August 26th.

GPS Algebra Classes

You were to pick up a scantron as you entered the classroom.  You took the Unit 1 Pretest today.

You were given back the graded Extra Practice - Integers Worksheet.

I put up the worked-out solutions to the Distributive Property Worksheet on the document camera.  I read out each answer and answered any questions you had over this assignment.

You were then given time to fill out a student information sheet.  We discussed what each section of the information sheet was asking for as well.  This was collected and will be filed for the semester.

We spent the rest of the time going over the GPS Algebra Syllabus.  This is on my blog if you need to reference it any time this school year.  You were given a copy of the last page of the syllabus.  A parent/guardian needs to read over the syllabus and fill out the page provided to you.  This handout needs to be brought back with your signature as well as a parent/guardian signature no later than Friday, August 26th.

*Be sure to have all of your school supplies with you on Monday.  It would be greatly appreciated if you could bring in one box of tissues for the class to use this year.

GPS Algebra Support Classes

We went over # 13 on the Solving Equations Review Worksheet by having one of you display your work on the document camera.  I did # 14 with you step-by-step and then you were given a chance to complete # 15.  We went over # 15 and then completed # 16 together.  I then put the solutions up to the back of the worksheet one last time.  This completed the Solving Equations Review Worksheet.

We then discussed how I post the GPS Algebra solutions on my white board for you to look at when necessary.  We also went over the procedure to follow if you are ever absent...check the blog first and then get any handouts from the Make-Up Crate in my room.  We thoroughly discussed the Make-Up Crate.

I went over the Hall Passes for our class.  You were given three hall passes for this semester.  If you do not use all of these passes this semester, you can turn them in on the day of the Fall Semester Final Exam for bonus points on the Final Exam.  So always try to come to class prepared!

We then did an activity that reviewed the material we covered this week.  The entire class was put into four groups according to the letter you got when you picked up a notecard in class.  Each group had five problems to complete during class.  All group members names were to be written on all papers and you were to work together to discuss each of the problems.  Every one of you turned in your paper at the end of class.  I will choose one paper per group to grade for accuracy and the members of that group will receive that grade.

The solutions to yesterday's homework assignment (Order of Operations Worksheet) were on the document camera when you entered the classroom so that you could begin checking.  I answered any questions you had over this assignment during class.

Wednesday, August 17th

GPS Algebra Support Classes

Welcome and introduction PowerPoint.

You were then to turn in the Solving Equations Review Worksheet.  Recall we completed the front of this assignment in class yesterday (see yesterday's blog post for details).

While I graded this assignment (front only) for accuracy, you were given an Algebra Word Find to work on during class.  You were able to see the finished product of the Word Find once I was done grading.  I placed the solution key on the document camera.

I then handed back the Solving Equations Review Worksheet and discussed with you how it was graded.  I emphasized the importance of following directions and showing all of your work.

You were then to flip the worksheet over and complete # 9 by yourself.  We went over how to work out this problem and then went through # 10-12 during class.  You were to work on # 13 with someone sitting around you and we will begin tomorrow's class with going over # 13 and finishing up the Solving Equations Worksheet (# 14-16).  The remaining three problems require an extra step of distributing.

GPS Algebra Classes

Welcome and introduction PowerPoint.

You were to get out the homework assignment from yesterday (Fraction Worksheet) and a pen to check it with.  I then placed the worked-out solutions on the document camera.  I read each answer out loud and answered any questions as we went through each of the problems.

I then did several examples involving the order of operations.  We also looked at how to use our calculator to help us with problems involving exponents.

You were then to clear your desk and given an Extra Practice with Integers Worksheet to complete.  You were told that this assignment would be collected and graded for accuracy.  You were also told that each problem was worth five points.  There were 20 problems total.

Once you finished this assignment, you were to turn it in and pick up the Order of Operations Worksheet and work on it for the remaining class time.

The homework assignment for today is to complete the Order of Operations Worksheet.  You may use your calculator on this assignment.

*The examples from class were # 3, 13, 17, and 30 on the Order of Operations Worksheet.

Tuesday, August 16th

GPS Algebra Support Classes

We looked at and discussed my blog in class.  I stressed the importance of checking it daily.

We did a Quantitative Comparison Warm-Up.  There were two problems that you were given a chance to complete these on your own and then able to compare your answers with someone sitting around you.  We went over the solutions to both of these in detail in class.

We talked about solving equations and completed the front side of the Solving Equations Review Worksheet that was handed out.  I did # 1-4, and #8 with you in class.  You were given time to complete # 5-7 in class and then some of you shared your solutions with the class by using the document camera.

The last portion of class was used to answer any questions on the GPS Algebra homework assignment from yesterday (Integers Worksheet).

We will complete the Solving Equations Review Worksheet tomorrow during class.

GPS Algebra Classes

You received your textbook today as well as two workbooks (Notetaking Guide and Test Preparation and Practice Workbook).  You were also given the information necessary to access your textbook on-line.  Make sure you keep this information in a safe place so you have it when you need it.

*If you are in the GPS Algebra Support class please bring the Notetaking Guide with you to class each day.

Monday, August 15th

GPS Algebra Support Classes

Welcome and introduction.  We discussed the purpose and goal of the Support class.  The supply list was handed out and discussed as well.

You were given an equation activity.  You were to work independently for about 10 minutes, given 10 minutes to work with a partner, and then several of you presented your work in front of the class on the document camera.

Welcome and introduction.  The supply list was handed out and discussed.  You were given a study skills handout and I went over some of the information included on this handout with you.

You were then given an activity titled:  Can you follow directions?  You were to complete this individually and then compare your results with someone sitting around you.  We discussed the importance of listening and following directions daily in class.

The Unit 1 calendar was handed out and gone over.  We reviewed the rules for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers.  You were given a few minutes to begin the Integers Worksheet.

The homework assignment for today is to complete the Integers Worksheet.
