GPS Algebra Support Classes

We began class with the vocabulary assessment.  You were to turn to page 366 in your Notetaking Guide and cross out the last vocabulary word as we have not addressed it yet.  I then put the definitions of five vocabulary words on the document camera.  You were to fill in the five boxes in your workbook with the correct definition that corresponds to the word in the box.  You were told that these would count 20 points each out of 100 points.

When you finished the vocabulary assessment, you were to turn in your Notetaking Guide and pick up a handout that reviewed probability.  You were given time in class to work on this assignment individually and then with your classmates.  We went over the solutions to # 1-18 in class and will go over # 19-23 tomorrow.

Tuesday, August 30th

GPS Algebra Support Classes

We began class by going over # 14 and 15 on page 365 in the Notetaking Guide.  You were then given a chance to work with others in the class on # 16 (a and b).  The solutions to # 16 were presented on the document camera by students in your class.

We discussed strategies for working through word problems. 

1)  Read the directions

2)  Read the problem over and over until you understand it

3)  If there is more than one question for a problem, focus only on one question at a time

4)  Set the problem up mathematically

5)  Solve (does your answer make sense?)

You were then given time to work with others in your class on # 17 and 18.  We went through the solutions to these together.

You were told in class to be prepared for a vocabulary assessment tomorrow that will be graded for accuracy.  So make sure you take some time to review the Unit 1 vocabulary.  All of the vocabulary should be in your Sprial Notebook or in your notes from GPS Algebra.  

The remaining class time was spent allowing you to work on or complete the GPS Algebra homework assignment (Review Worksheet for the Unit 1 Quiz) that is due today.  The assignment asked you to complete at least 12 stars, but it was encouraged in class to complete all of the problems as they are all great problems in helping you prepare for the Quiz tomorrow in GPS Algebra.

GPS Algebra Classes

We began class with a three problem warm-up on Combination word problems.  You were to copy the three problems, set up the Combination, and work it out.

When you completed this assignment, you were to get out the Review Worksheet for the Unit 1 Quiz and complete all problems that you did not complete for homework.  Recall that you only had to complete enough problems to get 12 stars so the entire worksheet did not have to be completed for homework.

I called you up one-by-one and checked your warm-up problems for accuracy.  If they were all correct, you received the solutions to the Review Worksheet for the Unit 1 Quiz and you could begin checking this assignment for accuracy.  If they were not all correct, I marked the one(s) that were not and you were to try them again.  Eventually, I put up the worked-out solutions on the document camera and answered any questions.  I made sure that everyone received a copy of the solutions to the Review Worksheet for the Unit 1 Quiz.

I then spent the rest of the class period answering questions over the Review Worksheet for the Unit 1 Quiz.

The homework assignment for today is to study and prepare for the Unit 1 Quiz, which is tomorrow. 

*Make sure to review all of the vocabulary that we have covered so far in Unit 1.

Monday, August 29th

GPS Algebra Support Classes

You received your grade sheet for your Spiral Notebook Check from Friday.  We discussed that there were 20 items, each worth five points, for a total of 100 points.  I then went through each of the 20 items by putting my Spiral Notebook on the document camera. 

* I reminded you that you are not to write anything in these notebooks except what you are told to write in there during the GPS Algebra Support class.

We then added four vocabulary words to the Spiral Notebook: Dependent Events, Independent Events, Mutually Exclusive Events, and Overlapping Events.  We discussed each of these and I provided you with an example.

I then put back up the solutions to Friday's classwork (Notetaking Guide, Page 359-360 # 1-18 all).  I answered any remaining questions about these Permutation problems.

Today, we discussed and practiced Combination problems.  Your assignment was to complete in class the following:

1)  Fill in the vocabulary box for the definition of combination on page 361 in your Notetaking Guide.  You just had to copy this from the document camera as I put up the definition for you.

2)  Complete # 1-16 on page 364-365.  We went over the solutions to # 1-13 together in class and will finish up going over # 14-16 tomorrow.

GPS Algebra Classes

You were to get out your homework assignments from last Wednesday (page 344 # 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21, and 25), Thursday (page 349 # 1, 3, 7, 12, 13, 18, and 19), and Friday (page 353 #1-7 all).  I went over each problem from Friday's assignment in detail.  I then asked if there were any additional questions from Wednesday and Thursday's assignments.

You were given a handout about Permutations and Combinations.  I went through an example using both the shortcut (used in class) and the book formula for both Permutations and Combinations.  We also discussed why both when you select zero objects the answer is one.

You were given a six problem warm-up to complete in class.  You were given a chance to compare your answers with someone sitting around you before we went over the solutions together.

The Review Worksheet for the Unit 1 Quiz was handed out and we discussed it.  You were given the remaining portion of class to work on this assignment.

The homework assignment for today is to complete the Review Worksheet for the Unit 1 Quiz.

Friday, August 26th

GPS Algebra Support Classes

You turned in your Spiral Notebook.  These were graded in class and you received your notebook back.  You will receive your grade for this check on Monday.

*Remember that you are only to write the information given to you in GPS Algebra Support in your Spiral Notebook.  Do not use this notebook for your GPS Algebra notes or homework assignments.

We practiced permutation problems.  You were to complete page 359-360 # 1-18 in your Notetaking Guide Workbook.  We went over the solutions in class and all questions were answered.

GPS Algebra Classes

We began class with a four problem warm-up deciding whether you would use a permutation or combination to calculate the sample space.

We went through a PowerPoint Presentation for notes on Lesson 6.4: Find Probabilities of Compound Events.  This lesson begins on page 351 in the textbook.

*This is the last new lesson that will be taught prior to the Unit 1 Quiz on Wednesday, August 31st.

The solutions to yesterday's homework assignment (page 349 # 1, 3, 7, 12, 13, 18, and 19) were handed out.  You were given time in class to check over your homework and ask questions.

The homework assignment for today is: Page 353 # 1-7 all.

Thursday, August 25th

GPS Algebra Support Classes

We began class by going back through the information that should be included in the Spiral Notebook.  These notebooks will be collected for a grade tomorrow.  Make sure you bring your Spiral Notebook with you to class tomorrow to turn in.

We previewed Combinations today and went through one example using the book formula as well as the shortcut.  This information was to be included in your Spiral Notebook.

I then asked if you had any questions on the homework assignment for GPS Algebra that is due today.  We discussed any questions you had and worked out several problems from the same page in your textbook that were not assigned to do for homework.  These additional problems provided you with more practice on Permutations.

You were then to complete by copying, the vocabulary and formula for Permutations on page 356 in your Notetaking Guide Workbook.

GPS Algebra Classes

You were given the week one Review Assessment back today and I explained how it was graded and gave you a chance to view all of the work and solutions on the document camera.

We then completed notes on Lesson 6.3: Find Probabilities Using Combinations.  This lesson begins on page 347 in your textbook.

You were given a worked-out solution key to yesterday's homework assignment (page 344 # 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21, and 25) to keep.  You were given time in class to check your answers for accuracy and ask questions, if necessary.

The homework assignment for today is: Page 349 # 1, 3, 7, 12, 13, 18, and 19.

*Remember to write the problems from the texbook on your paper, show all of your work, and circle your answers!

In both the GPS Algebra Support classes and the GPS Algebra classes, the signed syllabus is due tomorrow!

Upcoming GPS Algebra Unit 1 Quiz

The Unit 1 Quiz for GPS Algebra is one week from today...Wednesday, August 31st!

The Quiz will cover Lessons 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, and 6.1. 

Wednesday, August 24th

GPS Algebra Support Classes

You were given time in class to complete page 354 # 1-7 in your Notetaking Guide Workbook.  This assignment was to be turned in and was graded for accuracy.  I graded it in class while you copied information about factorials and permutations in your spiral notebook.  You were given your workbook back and I went through the solution to each of the seven problems.

We then previewed factorials and permutations and did a couple of examples.

*Remember that your Notetaking Guide Workbook MUST be brought with you to GPS Algebra Support EVERY day as we will use them often!

GPS Algebra Classes

We finished the notes on Lesson 6.2: Find Probabilities Using Permutations.  The notes were provided by the use of a PowerPoint Presentation.

The homework assignment for today is:  Page 344 # 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21, and 25.

 

Tuesday, August 23rd

GPS Algebra Support Classes

We began class with an example where you were to create a tree diagram and then list all the possible outcomes.  You were to write this example in your spiral notebook.  I gave you a chance to work on this problem with those students sitting around you.  We discussed this problem and two of your classmates presented their diagram and outcomes on the document camera.  I then put up my answers and gave you a chance to look over it, write anything down necessary, and ask questions.

We took some time to discuss the importance of the spiral notebook.  The spiral notebook was one item on your supply list that was given to you the very first day of school.  It must be a one subject, 70 sheet notebook.  I went over again exactly what needs to be written in the sprial notebook.  These will be collected on Friday (August 26th) and graded.  You must have a spiral notebook and not loose leaf paper. 

We spent the rest of the class period discussing the GPS Algebra homework assignment that is due today.  We began our discussion by writing the formula for probability in our spiral notebook.  We included an example as well.

You must bring your Notetaking Guide with you tomorrow to class.

GPS Algebra Classes

We began class with taking the first day of notes on Lesson 6.2: Find Probabilities Using Permutations.  This lesson begins on page 342 in the textbook.

We then did a popsicle stick task that included two parts.  You worked in small groups to complete this task.  We went over the solutions together in class.

I then spent the rest of the class period going over and aswering any questions over yesterday's homework assignment (page 340 # 1-13 odd).

The homework assignment for today is to review your notes from yesterday and today, return your signed syllabus if you have not already done so, and make sure you have all of your supplies with you in class each day.

Extra Help Rescheduled

For this week, I will not be available for extra help on Thursday morning (August 25th) due to a meeting.  I have rescheduled the extra help session for tomorrow (Wednesday, August 24th).  The time remains the same: 7:55-8:15 AM.

This change was written on the chalk board as well as announced in all classes today!
